'Speed drinking' bar loses bid to keep licence

A Hamilton bar known for so-called speed drinking has lost its bid to keep its liquor licence.

The High Court has upheld a decision not to renew the licence of the Pie Lab Bar on Hamilton's Victoria Street.

Speed drinking involves drinking shot glasses of high-strength alcohol.

While it is not illegal to sell shots, Waikato District Health Board spokesperson Ross Henderson says promoting excessive alcohol consumption is a breach of the Sale of Liquor Act.

Mr Henderson says the decision means other bars are now on notice, but he admits Pie Lab was a stand-out.
