Tree trimming urged by power company

Powerco says the wild weather experienced in Wairarapa is an example of why people must take responsibility for trimming trees near powerlines.

More than 5000 homes were left without power on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day after severe winds blew trees into powerlines, tearing many down.

The company says tree owners need to take responsibility and have them trimmed to be clear of overhead lines.

Powerco says it spends millions of dollars annually itself to trim trees.
