Police officer attacked by man with machete

9:18 am on 27 December 2010

A police officer in Waikato used pepper spray on Boxing Day to repel two attackers, one of them armed with a machete.

Police were called to a house in Pukete, north of Hamilton city, just before 5pm on Sunday, after reports two men were fighting.

Inspector Rod Lindsay says a teenager came towards the sergeant with a knife when he arrived at the property. Another swung at him with a machete.

The officer blocked both blows with his baton and used pepper spray on them. They retreated into the house.

The officer has a black eye.

Two teenagers will face charges in court in connection with the incident.

On 11 December, a police constable sustained serious skull and facial wounds in a machete attack when he stopped a stolen car near Taihape.

Two teenagers are accused of attempting to murder Constable Bruce Mellor, 57.
