No charges will be laid against a woman who left her baby inside a car while she went shopping, on a day when temperatures reached 28 degrees.

Police in Whangarei say parking wardens noticed the baby in the car at about midday on Christmas Eve when it started crying.

They say the wardens waited for five or six minutes before calling the police.

By the time officers arrived, the mother had returned to the car, saying she had ended up being longer in the shop than expected.
