Police in Christchurch say an inner city liquor ban there has led to a decrease in reported incidents of serious crime during 2010.
Senior Sergeant Philip Dean says people who are caught breaching the ban or causing disorder are being taken off the streets.
He told Summer Report that means they do not get a chance to commit more serious crimes. In 2010 those offences were down 18% in the area bordered by the four main central avenues.
In Wellington, police say that early arrests for breaches of the liquor ban has decreased violence in public places by 17%.
