Taxi company unhappy about stadium ban during World Cup

Wellington Combined Taxis is unhappy with a decision by Wellington City Council to ban taxis from Westpac stadium during the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

General manager Kevin Braid says the company's major concerns are for elderly and disabled people trying to get to the stadium.

He says the combination of Wellington's weather and a difficult walk to the stadium is 'a bad look' for Wellington.

The regulations also include a ban on public vehicle access to the stadium.

Mr Braid says Wellington Combined is working closely with the council to find solutions to the taxi ban.

The council says security is the main reason for the ban.

Cr John Morrison, who is a stadium trustee, says the council will negotiate with the International Rugby Board and the Rugby World Cup organisers on the final details of vehicle access to the stadium in February.
