New Year's honours for business leaders

New Zealand business leaders have joined the list of people recognised in the New Year's Honours list.

William Gallagher has been appointed a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Sir William enlarged and internationalised a company started by his father which initiated a world-beating invention, the electric fence.

Michael Hill has been made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business and the arts.

His Michael Hill International jewellery chain has 250 stores in New Zealand, Australia and North America which have been used to fund development in the arts and golf.

Sir Michael sponsors a violin competition which attracts some of the world's finest young musicians.

Auckland Chamber of Commerce chief executive Michael Barnett becomes an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
