Voluntary reporting of greenhouse gas emissions begins

Updated at 6:16 am on 1 January 2011

A number of new sectors can begin reporting their greenhouse gas emissions ahead of their full entry into the Emissions Trading Scheme from 1 January.

The sectors which can now begin voluntarily reporting their emissions are agriculture, waste and synthetic gases.

The voluntary reporting gives participants time to put systems in place and provide information about emissions and potential impacts on the sectors before full participation begins.

The sectors will be required by law to report their emissions from 1 January next year.

From 2013, the waste and synthetic gases sectors will be obliged to pay for any emissions, with agriculture entering in 2015.

Those dates could change after a review of the scheme, due to be undertaken this year.
