Two of three men who spent many hours in the water after their small boat capsized off Wellington's south coast on Thursday have been discharged from hospital.

The condition of a third man suffering from hypothermia is improving and he was listed as stable on Saturday.

The trio were on a fishing and diving trip when their boat sank near Sinclair Head about 6pm.

One of the men managed to swim to shore shortly after about 3.30am on Friday, but it was not until 10am that rescuers found his two friends.
