Trampers warned to take care after storm damage

7:21 am on 2 January 2011

The Department of Conservation is warning trampers at the top of the South Island to watch out for damage still to be repaired from the post-Christmas storms.

In some cases, workers will not start fixing damaged tracks until Wednesday.

Nelson and Marlborough were lashed by high winds and torrential rain on 28 December, which caused flooding in some regions.

DoC says four days later there are still slips and a fallen tree on the Queen Charlotte Track and walkers and mountain bikers should take care.

It says the Heaphy Track has suffered considerable storm damage and only confident trampers should tackle the route.

There is further damage to tracks in the Nelson Lakes region.

The department says other facilities are either impaired or closed until further notice.
