AIDS Foundation wants rapid testing for HIV

6:22 pm on 2 January 2011

The AIDS Foundation wants much wider access to so-called rapid testing for HIV, which is cheaper and faster than the most common method used to test for the virus.

The outgoing Executive Director, Rachael le Mesurier, says the antibody test in most general practices and sexual health clinics takes several days to get a result, which puts off high-risk people from having it done.

She says anything encouraging people to get tested must be pursued because the earlier the diagnosis the longer the survival.

Ms le Mesurier says she welcomes the Ministry's response that it is considering a recent review of HIV services which recommends looking again at current tests.
