The Department of Internal Affairs has marked a dubious milestone in blocking half a million attempts by internet users in New Zealand to access child sex websites.
Since February, the department has prevented access to 500 sites featuring images of child sex abuse for about 500,000 internet users.
The ministry says it's not known how many of these attempts were made by one person, or a group of people, or individuals.
Despite the success of the filter, the department says parents should in no way assume their children cannot get into inappropriate websites.
Deputy director Craig Armitage says that when Vodafone joins the system, 90% of internet users in New Zealand will be subject to the filter.
