A plea will be made on Monday to Prime Minister John Key to "save" New Chums beach, on the Coromandel Peninsula.

A development for 20 houses is proposed nearby.

The Green Party says people will position themselves on Matarangi beach, to form the words "John Key, save me, New Chums".

MP Catherine Delahunty says 90% of the eastern Coromandel is already given over to subdivisions.

She says the sale of land at Baring Head, Wellington, to a public consortium is a good example of how New Chums could be "saved".
