A large slip has blocked State Highway 6 between Lake Hawea and Haast.
Police say earth and debris, including toppled trees, has covered the road at Chelsea Creek.
They are urging motorists to turn back at both ends of the state highway at Makaroa north of Lake Hawea and at Haast on the West Coast.
