Police investigating a fatal car crash at a campground on Auckland's east coast say it is too early to tell if the driver will face charges.

The 20-year-old driver crashed his car after failing to take a bend on one of the access roads at the Pinewoods Motorcamp at Red Beach at 12.45am on Wednesday.

His 19-year-old passenger, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died.

Senior Constable Karl Bevin says the driver lost control of the car, which then went through a two-metre verge and plummeted down a 25-metre cliff to rocks below.

Mr Bevin says the driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, is in hospital and will be interviewed by police when he is well enough.
