Attempted murder charge laid after crime spree

A man has been charged with attempted murder following a shooting in Gisborne and aggravated robberies that followed it.

The 33-year-old is accused of shooting another man in the face with a .22 calibre rifle in the suburb of Elgin on Sunday before robbing a liquor store and stealing a car.

The accused was discharged from hospital on Wednesday. He also faces three counts of aggravated robbery and one count of assault with intent to rob.

He has been remanded in custody by consent until Monday for an appearance in the Gisborne District Court.

The 29-year-old who was shot is likely to be discharged from Waikato Hospital later this week.
