Provincial growers counting costs

6:22 am on 6 January 2011

Farmers and growers in Manawatu and Rangitikei are counting the cost of erratic weather over spring and summer.

Growers have been forced to harvest some crops weeks early, while farmers have had to sell off stock due to a feed shortage.

Federated Farmers says since heavy rains and floods hit the district in September, the weather has been unseasonably dry.

Regional president Gordon McKellar says the lack of rain means crop and pasture growth has been half or less of the norm.
