A forestry worker has undergone surgery in Gisborne hospital to have part of a tree branch removed from an arm.

The 30-year-old had just felled a tree in the Wharerata Forest, south of the city, about 9.30am on Thursday when a branch sprang back suddenly.

The Eastland Community Trust rescue helicopter flew a St John paramedic team to the scene.

The man was eventually taken to hospital where he is in a stable condition.
