Police have recovered a backpack belonging to a paua diver missing off Titahi Bay beach in Porirua, north of Wellington.
The diver, 49, was reported missing at about 11pm on Monday when he had not made any contact with his wife for several hours.
A search began on Tuesday morning.
Inspector Mike Wright says the backpack was found about 1km south of Titahi Bay beach.
