Sister city anti-whaling appeal being organised

11:34 am on 11 January 2011

The Green Party wants councils with sister cities in Japan to send an origami whale to their Japanese counterparts, to urge them to help stop Japan's whaling programme.

Gareth Hughes MP is on Tuesday launching a campaign in which he will visit 30 district and regional councils with links to Japanese cities.

They will be asked to send letters, folded into origami whales, to sister cities, asking them to protect whales in the Southern Ocean from their government's whaling ships.

Mr Hughes says some sister city relationships have been established for more than 30 years and provide a more personal way to help stop whaling.
