Summer could be warmer than usual - NIWA

Climate scientists say the end of summer is likely to be warmer than usual.

Latest information from the National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research indicates that most of New Zealand will likely be hotter and drier than usual for the next three months.

James Renwick says the average temperatures will probably only be one or two degrees higher than normal.

Dr Renwick says an unusual La Nina weather pattern hovering over the Tasman Sea is responsible for this prediction.

He says New Zealanders should prepare for any weather, because the same La Nina weather pattern is responsible for the heavy rain and flooding in Queensland, Australia.
