Review of 'rarity' drug qualification condition

6:03 am on 12 January 2011

Pharmac is considering changing the criteria for how rare an individual's medical condition must be to get funding under exceptional circumstances.

A scheme, which distributes money for non-funded medicines, is being reviewed. Seventy five submissions have been made to the State drug agency.

About one third of the submissions support the current criteria for funding, but about a quarter say the rules are too restrictive.

Three submissions suggested dropping the rarity criteria altogether, while other submissions proposed centralising the management of the scheme.

Consultation closes at the end of March.
