The Transport Agency is still monitoring the T2 lanes on State Highway One north of Wellington, that it announced were being abandoned almost two years ago. The cost is more than $50,000 per year.
The T2 lanes through Mana encourage people to car pool, by allowing vehicles with passengers to use a faster kerbside lane during rush hour.
A review in 2009 found the lanes, which by then had cost $1 million, had not relieved congestion, were confusing motorists and dangerous for pedestrians crossing the road.
NZTA later applied to change the lanes to clearways, but acknowledges the system is still under review.
