Collapse of building in Dunedin

1:48 pm on 12 January 2011

Part of a three storey building has collapsed in Dunedin.

Police say the incident occurred just before 9am when a building collapsed partly onto Rattray Street and also onto a neighbouring building, believed to be the Dragon Cafe.

It is not known at this stage if there are any injuries.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken believes the building was not in use at the time and was derelict.

Sixteen people in a neighbouring hotel have been evacuated.

Parts of Rattray Street will be closed for most of Wednesday.

Dunedin City Council says power has now been returned to buildings in Rattray Street, except for the one that collapsed.

The council says it advised the owner of the building earlier this week, to have it looked at by an engineer.
