A juvenile whale stranded on the shore of Port Waikato has been successfully refloated and sent out to sea.

Five whales were stranded on Thursday morning, but the four adult whales died.

Department of Conservation staff are liaising with local Maori before burying the whales in a suitable spot of sand dunes nearby.

It is understood they are Gray's beaked whales.
