A convicted killer is being allowed to stay in New Zealand after winning a battle against deportation to his home country of Samoa.
Troy Lologa, 26, stabbed Rodney Tenamua, 32, a father of seven, to death in a brawl in Papatoetoe in 2005 after the victim stabbed him.
The Immigration Minister ordered that he be deported when he was released last April when half-way through a five-year prison sentence for manslaughter.
Lologa was granted residence 10 years ago with his parents and 10 of his siblings.
The deportation review tribunal heard he was head prefect at school and a regular churchgoer, who had wanted to be a policeman and did not pose an on-going risk to public safety.
The tribunal ruled it would be unfair or unduly harsh to send him back to Samoa.
