NZ on Air overhauling music industry funding

10:01 pm on 14 January 2011

New Zealand on Air is overhauling the way it funds the music industry.

The Government agency is changing the way it spends its annual budget of $5 million funding and promoting musicians following an independent review.

NZ On Air chief executive Jane Wrightson says funding has been focused on commercial radio until now.

Ms Wrightson says the review found the agency needs to also provide money for music played on other platforms, such as online and digital.

She says the current three funding streams for albums, new recording artists and music videos will be cut and NZ On Air will instead fund just single tracks, including videos.

Album funding is to be scrapped because it costs too much.

Ms Wrightson says the new system will mean more artists will get funding, but lesser amounts. Details are still being worked on, but the new policy will be ready for implementation in July.
