Auckland mayor wants free entry to city's swimming pools

Auckland Mayor Len Brown wants to extend the free council swimming pools policy from Manukau to the rest of the city.

Mr Brown is commissioning a report on the cost of making all Auckland's 23 council-run pools free of charge.

Admission is free at seven swimming pools in south Auckland in the area operated by the former Manukau City Council, where Mr Brown was mayor until he was elected to run the super city.

Normal adult charges at other swimming pools in the region range from $3.10 to $7.80.

Mr Brown says free access to swimming pools is a great gift to young people, and provides somewhere for them to go and have fun, be active and get off the streets.

The study will be completed by the end of March, and is part of the mayor's 100 projects in 100 days.
