Security improved around vandalised carvings

7:53 am on 16 January 2011

Rotorua District Council hopes improved security measures will prevent any repeat of vandalism that damaged two Maori carved posts.

The posts, or pou, along State Highway 36 between Tauranga and Rotorua, were attacked with a chainsaw and had to be pulled down in October, just 10 days after being put up. Police have not found who was responsible.

The carvings have now been re-erected on a metre high plinth with a barrier around them.

The pou represent two iwi from the area, Ngati Rangiwewehi and Ngai Te Rangi.
