Levin fire left to burn itself out

4:54 pm on 18 January 2011

A fire at a building near Levin will be left to burn itself out.

The blaze started at 3.20am on Tuesday in a building containing a large quantity of firewood.

Manawatu assistant area commander Roger Calder says after hours of fighting the flames it is not practical to continue, as no more damage can be done to the concrete and steel building.

Mr Calder and his team will monitor the fire as it burns out in a controlled way, which could take a couple of days.

People will see a lot of smoke coming out of the former Kohitere Boys Home complex, but they should not be worried, he says.
