Disaster relief request for New Zealanders considered

6:21 pm on 19 January 2011

The Australian Government is considering a request from the New Zealand High Commissioner to make all New Zealanders affected by the Queensland and New South Wales floods eligible for a disaster relief payment.

Only those who are Australian residents, or who moved there before Februrary 2001, can apply for the $A1000 payment.

The Centrelink welfare agency says some exceptions apply.

However, any New Zealander who has lost income because of the floods may receive a disaster income recovery subsidy of about $A470 per fortnight.
