Higher levies urged by recycling company

A recycling company says higher waste levies and more infrastructure to convert rubbish would help prevent materials being dumped into landfill sites when they could be recycled.

Local Government New Zealand has accused recycling companies of not operating entirely honestly because of the cost of stockpiling material and low demand for recyclable material overseas.

The Zero Waste recycling company says consideration should be given to having plants that convert plastics into diesel.

Director Jo Knight says recycling is mostly dictated by market demand, but the Government could help by increasing a current levy of $10 per tonne at landfills.
