Auckland international airport is tipped to become a major economic force as it grows faster than the economy over the next two decades.

A report, commissioned by Auckland International Airport Ltd, says the airport will contribute up to 19% of New Zealand's economic growth by 2031.

It says the airport will contribute as much as 27% of the Auckland region's economic growth in 20 years, up from 21% in 2006.

Chief executive Simon Moutter says the airport needs to be seen as a serious contributer to the economy.

He also says the airport company wants to improve connections with Asian countries, where many New Zealand businesses export to.
