Greenhouse gas research projects announced

The Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre has announced $15 million worth of projects - its first long-term grants.

Among the 18 projects, scientists will investigate whether methane gas can be captured from dairy effluent ponds and ways to breed cattle which belch less methane.

Other projects will try to improve sprays for stopping the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide being released from pasture where cows urinate.

Director Harry Clark says the grants make it possible to greatly enlarge the research already begun, and to accelerate progress.
