A 21-year-old man arrested by police investigating the alleged abduction of a woman on Great Barrier Island has been charged with breach of bail.
The unemployed man will appear in the Auckland District Court on Monday and police have not ruled out more serious charges being laid.
The man and a woman, who was believed to have been abducted, had been the subject of an intensive search of the island.
A specialist search team, dogs, the Armed Offenders Squad and a helicopter searched for them for about 36 hours.
They were found on Saturday afternoon walking down a bush track in Mason Road.
The woman was taken to Auckland Hospital for a medical checkup. Residents say she is Nortessa Montgomerie, 19, who grew up on the island.
A man who was injured in an attack at a house on Great Barrier Island was discharged from hospital on Saturday. Police say he is to continue receiving specialist medical treatment.
Police say the 19-year-old woman was in a house in Claris on the east coast of the island at the time of the attack.
Relief
The chair of the Great Barrier community board, Paul Downie, says there is an immense sense of relief that the young woman has been found safe.
He says about 50 residents supported police officers in their search and many of them had no sleep until the woman was found.
Mr Downie says a drop-in centre was set up to help young people cope with the incident, as teenagers on the island are very close.
