A homicide investigation has been launched after a post-mortem was carried out on Saturday on the body of a woman found in flames in Waikato.

The body was found burning on the side of a rural road, west of Huntly, on Thursday night.

The police believe an accelerant was used to start the fire and they are awaiting forensic samples taken from the scene to determine what it was.

The officer in charge of the operation, Detective Senior Sergeant Nigel Keall, says they believe they have been able to identify the woman, but it is still too early to release her name.
