Five people are critically ill in hospital after two cars crashed head-on in Waikato.

The collision happened on State Highway 2, one kilometre east of Coalfields Road in Maramarua, just before 11am on Sunday.

A two-year-old child was airlifted to Starship Hospital in Auckland, and a 59-year-old woman was flown to Auckland Hospital.

The three other occupants of the vehicles were taken by ambulance to Middlemore Hospital.

The Waikato Serious Crash Unit is working to determine the cause of the crash.

Five hours later, another crash involving three vehicles occurred close to the same location.

In that incident, two drivers were taken to hospital with serious injuries, while the occupants of the third car involved were unhurt.
