Canoeist rescued from riverbank

3:14 pm on 24 January 2011

A canoeist who had been stuck on the banks of the Whanaganui River for a night has been rescued.

The 45-year-old woman became fatigued and hypothermic while canoeing with a group and pulled into the bush between Raetihi and Whangamomona about 5pm pm on Sunday.

Attempts by the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter and a Defence Force Iroquois helicopter on Sunday evening to rescue her were thwarted by bad weather.

The ambulance service said the woman has food, warm clothes and a tent.

The base manager of the rescue helicopter service in Palmerston North, Fergus Maclachlan, says the woman was winched to safety about 9am on Monday.

He says she was cold but in good health, and has been dropped back to safety with her family at Pipiriki.
