11:56 am on 24 January 2011

Police say it is possible an explosion in Turangi on Saturday night was related to a drug manufacturing operation, but they say it is not methamphetamine.

An explosion occured in a bedroom of a family home on Paehoro Grove around 7pm.

Neighbours doused the 30-year-old man in water before emergency services took him to Waikato Hospital.

He was in critical condition in hospital on Monday and was expected to be transferred to the burns unit at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland.

Police say other people were present at the time of the explosion but they are yet to speak to all those involved and are still waiting on analysis of exhibits taken from the scene.
