The woman has been named as Ranjeeta Sharma, 28, of South Auckland, whose body was found burning on a rural road near Huntly on Thursday evening.

Pathology reports indicate that she was alive when set alight and that the cause of her death was the fire.

Police say Ms Sharma's husband left New Zealand for Fiji on Friday with the couple's four-year-old son. Ms Sharma's car was found at Auckland airport.

Police say the husband is a person of interest, but they are keeping an open mind about the chain of events leading to her death.

Interpol has been contacted to help with the search.

Detective Senior Sergeant Nigel Keall says police are interested in sightings of Ms Sharma's car - a silver Subaru stationwagon with the registration number FSD433.

Mr Keall says the vehicle may have been seen travelling between South Auckland and the Huntly area on Thursday or Friday.

Police have not yet identified the accelerant used to start the fire.
