Dunedin council rejects Rugby World Cup fan zone

The mayor of Dunedin is refusing to spend more money on hosting the 2011 Rugby World Cup, saying the South Island city has already gone into unprecedented debt to get ready for the tournament.

The council has rejected a $300,000 Rugby World Cup official fan zone proposed for the Octagon in the central city.

Mayor Dave Cull says ratepayers have already paid more than $100 million on building a new stadium.

Mr Cull says he was hoping some of that money would be made back in World Cup ticket sales but he has learnt that all the ticket revenue will go to Rugby New Zealand.
