Lawyer hopes for settlement over Hillary watches

The lawyer representing Sir Edmund Hillary's children is hoping for an out of court settlement regarding watches the explorer's widow, June, Lady Hillary, put up for auction overseas last year.

In November, the High Court in Auckland granted Peter and Sarah Hillary an injunction requiring Lady Hillary to withdraw the watches from sale.

Antiquorum Auctioneers in Switzerland was to have auctioned the watches.

But their ownership is disputed and one of the items, a 1953 Rolex, is protected by statute and needs to be returned to New Zealand.

Lawyer Alex Witten-Hannah says he is still waiting to hear from Lady Hillary's lawyer, and hopes a settlement will be reached between the parties within the next three months.
