Police and the Fire Service say they are investigating a caravan fire that is now considered to be deliberately lit.
Emergency services were called to the fire about 10.30pm on Thursday in a residential suburb of Hampstead in Ashburton.
The caravan was destroyed, while its occupant was taken to hospital with serious burns to his arms and legs. He is in a stable condition.
A Fire Safety investigator and police are conducting a scene examination at the site on Friday.
