Australian gang trying to establish NZ base - police

8:22 pm on 28 January 2011

Police say a notorious Australian motorcycle gang linked to drug dealing, extortion and homicide is trying to establish a base in New Zealand.

The Rebels MC is Australia's largest outlaw motorcycle gang with a reported 2000 members.

Detective Superintendent Brett Kane, from the organised and financial crime agency, says this gang has a 40-year reputation.

He says those attempting to start it up in this country are largely ex-patriate New Zealanders.

Mr Kane says police dealt with about 20 associated gang members as recently as last Wednesday at Auckland International Airport.

They were meeting other Rebels MC associates and an Australian gang member was refused entry, he says.

Police say they will bring the full weight of the law on these people should they try to operate in New Zealand.
