3:45 pm on 29 January 2011

The husband of a woman burned to death near Huntly last week has appeared in the Hamilton District Court charged with her murder.

Diwesh Sharma, 29, a postal worker from Manukau, is accused of killing Ranjeeta Sharma, 28.

The body of Mrs Sharma was found on a rural road near Huntly on 20 January.

Her husband took their son, aged four, to Fiji the next morning.

New Zealand police officers travelled there to interview him and both accompanied the officers back to Auckland on Friday. Police say the accused returned of his own free will.

He was arrested in Hamilton on Friday night and will appear again in court on Tuesday.

He is also facing an earlier charge of breaching bail.

He is being held in custody. No application was made for bail.
