Kaeo people frustrated by continual flooding

9:47 am on 31 January 2011

People in Kaeo in Northland are frustrated about being repeatedly flooded in recent years.

Resident Warren Martin says many people whose homes were flooded in 2007, were told they would be lifted and relocated to higher ground.

He says they were promised $500,000 in assistance by the previous Government after two big floods in 2007, but have not yet got it.

Mr Martin says if the Government is prepared to spend several billion dollars on Christchurch following the Canterbury earthquake, it should also help the people of Kaeo.

Violet Walker, who owns a takeaway shop in the main street, says the flooding on Friday night shows the inadequacy of flood prevention work to date.

She says Northland Regional Council has been spending money on computer-modelling of the flood plain, when it should have been dredging rivers.

Northland Regional Council says it took a flood risk reduction proposal to the Ministry of Civil Defence last July and has had no formal reply.

But the Ministry says it has had frequent correspondence and discussion with the regional and district councils, and the proposal is being worked through.
