Power restored after winds batter Canterbury

5:48 pm on 2 February 2011

Power has been restored to most households in Canterbury affected by strong winds gusting up to 130km/h on Wednesday.

Lines company Orion says trees fell on lines near Leeston, south of Christchurch, breaking two power poles.

Some 2000 customers were without power earlier, but Orion says less than 100 are still affected and should be fixed by Wednesday night.

On the West Coast, State Highway 73 between Jacksons and Kumara has reopened after being affected by flooding earlier in the afternoon.

State Highway 8 between Fairlie and Twizel, and State Highway 80 from Mt Cook and Pukaki is still closed to towing vehicles because of the wind.
