Police are continuing the search for a man believed to have fallen into a river near Beaumont in Otago.

They say the 27-year-old man went to collect water samples from the river but did not return.

Police believe he has fallen into the Talla Burn Stream, which runs into the Clutha River.

They say the water level is high in the swiftly flowing, dirty stream an these conditions are hindering the search.

Search efforts are concentrating on both the Talla Burn and the Clutha.

The Dunedin water rescue team is searching and the police dive squad is due to arrive from Wellington.

Items described by the police as being of interest have been found.

The man works for a company which collects water samples.
