Some walking tracks on Mount Maunganui could be closed until July, because of damage caused by heavy rain from Cyclone Wilma.

Some walking tracks on Mount Maunganui could be closed until July, because of damage caused by heavy rain from Cyclone Wilma.

Contractors are expected to start working on Friday to clear the slips, which have closed the tracks.

Park ranger Warren Aitken says people need to realise there was significant damage on the Mount which is going to take some time to repair it.

It is estimated the storm left 80 or 90 slips, seven of which are considered major.

Mr Aitken says he hopes to have some tracks around the Mount open within two weeks, but it could be four or five months before all are cleared.
