10:23 pm on 8 February 2011

A shortlist of three consortiums has been announced for the Government's first full-scale Public Private Partnership.

Expressions of interest have been received to design, build and run a proposed 1000-bed men's prison at Wiri in South Auckland.

The consortiums are led by the multinational prison firms G4S, the GEO Group and Serco.

Each has recruited its own design team, as well as construction and investment partners.

Construction firms Mainzeal, Hawkins and Fletchers are involved.

The Corrections Department says the final contract should be awarded by July next year.
